“What we are seeing is that they are engaged in a game of chicken and the game is ending,” the diplomat said. “The question is whether Iran will reach its red lines and what happens after that.”
The Islamic Republic has in the past said it would not hesitate to take such a step, as it faces an escalating U.S.-led economic embargo.
But these new incidents involving the tanker threat and now, in response to a drone strike on an oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia on September 14, the drone-and-missile strike on the Khurais oil field, raise questions about whether the Iranians will “go for broke” as U.S. officials have warned.
U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters were quoted in the news media, including the New York Times, as saying that the new American “credible” threat to Iranian oil tankers was in response to the oil attack.
“What happened on September 14 is not an accident,” one senior administration official told the newspaper. “What happened is the Iranians acted.”
The administration official said the U.S. retaliated for the drone strike on the Saudi oil field.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched four oil tankers in the Sea of Oman on Thursday, causing minor damage. One of the tankers, according to U.S. estimates, was heading toward the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for the export of Saudi oil to the rest of the world.
The U.S. government did not publicly confirm the identity of the vessels as U.S. officials said privately that they believed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was behind the attack, a conclusion others have reached.
